The Sheiling

The Sheiling (shepherds hut in gaelic) is set in seven acres overlooking Loch Dunvegan and Leinish Bay, with dramatic views out towards the Cuillin mountains. Built in 2009 from sustainable timber sources, it is double glazed and fully insulated for all-year-round accommodation. The raised timber floor sits on just twelve foundation pads, without the need for a solid concrete foundation, and The Sheiling therefore has a low carbon footprint. Inside, the exposed timber frame and high ceilings create a cosy yet airy loft-like feel.

The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife where sightings of seals, eagles and deer are common place, and the absence of light pollution makes for incredible night skies including the Northern Lights. There is a general store/post office only 2 miles away and bigger shops, restaurants, and a filling station in Dunvegan, 7 miles from The Sheiling. The famous Three Chimneys restaurant is less than two miles from The Sheiling, as is Cafe Lephin which is on the way to the famous Neist Point. The Stein Inn (Skye’s oldest pub) and the Loch Bay Restaurant are about 30 minutes drive away, on the neighbouring Waternish peninsula.

All Accommodation is based on one floor and includes:

Transport and Communications

There is an adequate mobile phone signal in and around The Sheiling (you are advised to check online for the signal coverage of your provider).

We do not have Wifi at The Sheiling, but free Wifi is usually available at the nearby Glendale Village Hall.

The Sheiling, though only seven miles from good facilities at nearby Dunvegan, is fairly remote and the local bus and taxi service is limited. It is therefore quite difficult to get around without your own car.
